New Jersey was in the film business before anyone had heard of Hollywood. In 1893, Thomas Edison's team in West Orange started making films in the Black Maria, which the National Park Service calls the first building built for recording motion pictures. By 1915 Universal and Fox both had studios in Fort Lee, a town that still calls itself the birthplace of the motion picture industry in America.
Today the state has more than 70 sound stages, and Netflix has broken ground on a studio facility at Fort Monmouth that will add 12 more, with nearly 500,000 square feet between them. Most of the everyday video work is for brands and businesses, though. Johnson & Johnson is in New Brunswick, Merck in Rahway, Bristol Myers Squibb in Princeton and Prudential in Newark, along with a long list of pharma and finance companies whose scripts go through legal before anyone presses record.
We've put ourselves first. The other nine run from Bergen and Morris counties down to the Shore and the Philadelphia suburbs.
Putting ourselves top of a New Jersey list from across the river is cheeky, we know. Our office in SoHo is a short train ride from Jersey City and Newark, and our work fits the industries this state runs on.
For La Roche-Posay, part of L'Oréal, we're making 15 YouTube videos and 90 Shorts for the brand's global channel, led by Dr Raj and a cast of eight people with real skin conditions, found through open casting calls. Some are doctor-answer videos, designed to be cited when people ask AI search tools about their skin. For Sumsub, an identity verification company, we made a documentary telling the story of scam hunter Erin West's trip to Nigeria to track down sextortion scammers. With its YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels, it passed 5 million views.
A careless claim or a muddled message on camera causes real trouble for brands like these, so our process starts with the strategy and the packaging (the title and thumbnail), long before the cameras come out.

Grey Sky Films, in Succasunna, celebrated 25 years in 2025, and puts healthcare and pharma first among the industries it offers video production services to. Client logos include Regeneron, Sanofi, Eli Lilly and Atlantic Health System, and it has worked on projects for Montefiore Nyack Hospital for nine years. Co-founder Mark Serao and the team also make their own scripted comedy series, The Agency, and an annual holiday short film, so there's a sense of humour behind the hospital work.
Awakened Films has a production studio in Madison with a sound stage and cyclorama wall, and describes itself as a woman-owned business. It makes commercials, corporate video and social media content for clients including Church & Dwight's Orajel and Blue Apron, and it ran a campaign starring Lindsay Lohan for Lawyer.com. If you want TV spots and social content from one local production team with its own studio, Awakened covers the lot.
IMP Studios, in Paramus, is built around its stages: a 22-foot LED wall for virtual production, an 800 square foot pre-lit green screen and a live room for voiceover and music recording. Post-production happens there too, with editing, colour, VFX and animation all in-house. A testimonial from CentraState Healthcare System says it uses IMP for TV commercials, and it marketed itself as a 2026 World Cup production base, a 12-minute drive from MetLife Stadium.
Ferrum Films was set up in Fairfield in 2017 and makes cinematic brand films and commercials. It owns its cinema gear and brings it to set in its own van. Featured work includes a Lamborghini brand film and a Tunnel to Towers film with Guy Fieri, and its client list runs to Netflix and the New York Yankees. It also offers stage hire at Vexio Studios in Fairfield, which has a drive-in LED volume, so a car can go straight onto the set.
SKO Films is a New Jersey company founded by creative director Stephen Ko, and it specialises in product commercials and travel films. Client logos include HP, Samsung, Marriott Bonvoy and Getty Images, and it can run the ad buying for your campaigns through its partner, CloudVast Media. Consumer and hospitality brands will like the look of the portfolio.
Cine Selector, a small owner-run team in Monmouth County, does a lot of pharma and patient-advocacy storytelling. It made Breathless, a scleroderma documentary with Queen Latifah for Boehringer Ingelheim that it says aired three times on A+E, and a Pfizer and American Diabetes Association PSA with Cedric the Entertainer. Director Adam Worth has won New York Emmys for editing and photography, and the team owns its kit.

Custom Video Productions has been in the creative business since 1978 and works from Red Bank, where it keeps a studio reserved full-time for shooting. Its work includes fundraising video for Meridian Health and a series of instructional videos for Rutgers Business School students learning online, plus drone and time-lapse work. Shore-area organisations get a long-established crew close to home.
Two Animators! was co-founded in 2001 by brothers Tom and Joe Costantini, and does hand-drawn 2D animation from Mercerville, near Trenton. Its work includes Gridiron Heights, Bleacher Report's NFL cartoon, and MTV's Football U, with Mattel, Pokémon, Rockstar Games and Colgate among the logos on its site. If your idea needs characters, this is the place.
Mike Perlow, who spent 17 years as a TV sportscaster, founded Perlow Productions in 2007. The Marlton company makes corporate video, 2D and 3D animation, multi-camera event livestreams and drone flythroughs, and it will even create an animated character to act as your brand's spokesperson. Client logos include Dell Technologies, Subaru, PLAYMOBIL and Scrub Daddy. It's the strongest South Jersey option we found, and handy for Philadelphia too.
A lot of New Jersey video content is made for pharma and finance brands, so experience in those industries counts, and a few of these questions matter more here than they would elsewhere.
Can they find real people? Real patients and employees often make more convincing talent than actors, and they're harder to find. Ask about the company's approach to casting them, and how it handles consent and releases before anyone is filmed.
Who's the expert on camera? A pharmacist or a financial adviser who explains things clearly on camera does more for trust than an animated explainer with a voiceover. Ask whether the company has coached experts who aren't used to being filmed, and who does the scripting.
Will people find it when they search? Patients and customers ask YouTube and AI chatbots health and money questions every day. Ask how the company writes titles and transcripts so your answers reach that audience.
Can they shoot on both sides of the Hudson? Plenty of New Jersey brands work with marketing agencies or have a second office in Manhattan. Ask whether the company can handle New York permits as well as New Jersey ones, so a two-location shoot doesn't need two crews.
Filmmakers keep New Jersey busy. The state estimates $834 million of production spend in 2024, up 41% on the year before, and Happy Gilmore 2 was the biggest production ever filmed here.

The state's tax credit pays up to 35% of qualified spend, or 30% within 30 miles of Columbus Circle in Manhattan. A project needs at least $1 million of qualified New Jersey spend to apply, which puts it out of reach for most brand videos, so budget without it.
Permits are a local matter. The state film commission says each city and town has its own rules for film production, so get your production company to check with the town early, especially for street shoots and drone footage. If the shoot crosses into Manhattan, New York City needs its own permit, which our guide to NYC film permits covers.

Drop us a line about the project and who has to sign it off, and we'll build the approval time into the plan, so expectations are clear from the start. We're happy to meet in New York or on your side of the river.
